Philadelphia

Philadelphia, often referred to as Philly, is the largest city in Pennsylvania and the countrys sixth-largest city. The city is also known as the City of Brotherly Love (from Greek: philos: "love", and adelphos: "brother")

Another nickname of Philadelphia is the City of Murals because the city is packed with beautiful paintings, the city is also filled with many glass mosaics; a sampling of this eye-catching public art can be seen on South Street east of Broad.

It is said that Philadelphia has the largest collection of public art in the United States; it is thanks, in great part, to the Department of Recreation's Mural Arts Program, the program has funded more than 200 pieces of public art by professional and amateur artists.

During Americas colonial days, Philadelphia was the largest and most influential city around; the city is the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence. The Independence National Historical Park houses many historical sites, its most famous attraction is the Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed; in The Assembly Room visitors can see the chair that President George Washington used.

Other historic sites include the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, the Betsy Ross House (where she may have made the first American Flag), the First Bank of the United States, the Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial and the Liberty Bell Pavilion which houses the Liberty Bell, an icon of liberty and justice.

Philadelphia contains many art museums; major museums include the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Independence Seaport Museum, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia, the Franklin Institute, the National Constitution Center, the African American Museum in Philadelphia, and the Rodin Museum.

Other significant tourist attractions are Penn's Landing, and the Philadelphia Zoological Gardens. Philadelphia is also home to the United States' first zoo and hospital. Philadelphia offers many public statue displays such as Keys To Community by James Peniston and Clothespin by Claes Oldenburg. LOVE Park features the famous LOVE sculpture.
