Weather in New York
The area around New York has a humid continental climate (which prevails in the north-eastern United States), although New York City has its own micro-climate product of the urban heat island phenomenon so that it is hotter in the summer and warmer in winter than the surrounding suburbs.
Summer in New York City tend to be warm, occasionally hot, and muggy. In June, July (the average warmest month), August and September, the city gets tropical storms which pass quickly and occasionally a hurricane. Visitors should bring summer clothing plus a light jersey to avoid freezing in the numerous air conditioning buildings.
Winter in New York City is usually cold, with occasional snowfalls (snow is common in the mountains and interior part of the state), freezing rain and bitter cold winds, although the city’s coastal location ensures that winters are not as cold as inland cities, December through early March count on cold temperatures at least for part of the day. The average coolest month is January.
Spring in New York is enjoyably warm and the weather heats up to temperatures of around 25°F to 30°F (80-90°F) by mid-May.
The best time to visit New York is Autumn, when temperatures are mild, days are sunny and humidity not too elevated.
