New York has a large number of major parades and street festivals. The St. Patrick's Day Parade on Fifth Avenue is widely celebrated in New York City, It was held since 1766 by Irish militiamen, nowadays everybody wear green-coloured clothing and items and celebrate this Irish Festival.

4th of July is the most patriotic holiday in the US, it is celebrated with the largest fireworks in the world sponsored by Macy’s. Other activities held on fourth of July are the Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest, free concerts at Battery Park, the Travis Fourth of July Parade, private parties, among other activities.

In August, The New York International Fringe Festival, or FringeNYC, is an alternative festival of visual and performing arts. SummerStage is an important free performing arts festivals sponsored by the City Parks Foundation.

The Feast of San Gennaro is a annual 11-day street celebration of the Italian Culture, The event is held in mid-September in Manhattan’ Little Italy, features a Roman Catholic procession, parades, street vendors, food, and games. The Columbus Day Parade takes place on the second Monday of each October since 1929; there is a substantial parade down Fifth Avenue from 44th St. north to 79th St.

The New York's Village Halloween Parade is the nation's largest public Halloween celebration, with 50,000 costumed participants; it is held the night of every October 31 in Greenwich Village.

Thanksgiving is one of the most colourful holidays of the year in New York City. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual event presented since 1924 by Macy's Department Store; more than 2.5 million people line the New York’s streets every year to see the giant inflatable cartoon-character balloons and dozens of marching bands.

New Year's Eve celebrations in New York City has no comparison, hundreds of thousands of people come from everywhere to see appreciate the famous "ball dropping" atop One Times Square, a tradition since 1906.

New York is also the host of important cultural festivals. The Tribeca Film Festival, founded in 2002 by Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro and Craig Hatkoff, is one of the most important film festivals in the world. The goal of the Tribeca Film Festival is to celebrate New York City as a major filmmaking community.

The New York Festival of Song presents an annual series of song concerts of great beauty and originality. The New York Book Festival was created to celebrate books; it is an occasion for readers to gain exposure to gems that deserve greater credit from the world’s publishing houses.
