Art Exhibitions in New York

New York is an internationally renowned centre for art, the city has more than 2,000 arts and cultural organizations and more than 500 art galleries including alternative exhibition places, private galleries, non-profit organizations, and more.
Galleries range in size from the monumental to the miniscule, and offer exhibits of different kinds of art such as jewellery, glass art, paintings, prints, photography, rugs, sculpture, and many other types of art. You will find works of old masters and emerging artists, traditional and contemporary art.
There are a great concentration of galleries in areas like the East Village, TriBeCa and Brooklyn. Recently established and emerging artists have exhibits on neighbourhoods such as Chelsea and SoHo galleries. Many of the top names in the gallery world are clustered in DUMBO and Chelsea.
The Upper East Side galleries tend to focus on antiques and historical art. Uptown galleries, around the crossroads of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, tend to be more conventional and elite feeling.
Most galleries are free to the public and are open from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm; generally on Sundays and Mondays are closed.
Publications such as Art Guide of the New York Times, New Yorker's weekly Goings on About Town section, Time Out New York, New York Press and New York Magazine are a good source to find out about what is currently showing, but for a more complete list of galleries, artists and genres pick up a copy of the Art Now Gallery Guide, available at most galleries, museums and bookstores around the city.
